Drawing blending into a photo

Hi All

I've done a lot of postprocessing over the years but not that skilled in actual construction/manipulation. I have an idea of a picture that is drawing blending into a photo.

As far as I've come is that I will start with a photo, import it into Illustrator. Do some sketching on top of one side of the photo. And then comes my challange.

How do I blend these two things into one picture where the drawing seamless blends into a photo?

Do any of you have some hints as how start this job?

Thought of doing like this.
- crop photo as fits
- take photo into Illustrator, make the sketch on top of the drawing
- import tha sketch into phtoshop - photo on one layer and sketch on another
- layer mask, put a gradiant on the mask

That would work just fine. You can even apply blending modes on your layer to produce interesting results. You have the basic idea on how to do it and that is the most important aspect of it. The second one is experiment on what would make it look like that way you envisioned it. Good luck.

OR you can create a drawing FROM the photograph and blend that in with the original photo. That way every line blends appropriately, and easily.
(Blue Peter special - and for those who don't know what I mean, kids program where they have "one they did earlier").

Had to go to advanced to reply this. Weird. Anyway...

Here's a good (if a bit long winded) tutorial of how to create a decent pencil sketch in 'shop.

Then blend back to the original image as you please.

I had the drawing since a while ago, but never thought of blending it with photo.
Thanks for the idea! Blending is really the easy part in a project like this...

PS: The pic came out kinda large, oh well...
