Practice for lunar eclipse

I thought I'd have a go at getting all my exposures right in preparation for next weekend's lunar eclipse.
This was shot at 800mm f8.0 1/60th ISO100.

Now all I need is a clear night next weekend. Here's hoping.

I've tried this type of picture myself, but have never managed to produce anything this good.
For me an excellent picture.
IMO nothing needs to be changed. If you have or take any more like this, please post I would love to see them.

Mark - Just to add my words of admiration.

We've had many pics of that lump of rock (Others - click on 'Astrophotography' in the 'Discussion Categories' list). That's amongst the best I've seen.

Wonderful shot, so sharp. We missed out on the clear weather in the Northern Territory about a month ago but I couldn't have taken a sht like that. Good luck with the clouds and make sure you post it for us.

I've come to realize a couple things about the moon: it's really bright, and it's pretty darn fast. And armed with that hard-won knowledge, I've NEVER COME CLOSE to image of it this good. How did you get to 800 mm? And so much for not using over a 1.4 converter due to lack of sharpness. What make is your converter? I dont think anyone except we who have tried and repeatedly failed can appreciate how good this image is!

I purchased a new 400mm 2 days ago...I am now waiting patiently for the night sky to clear for a good shot at the moon. I would love to get what you did, I guess we shall see.
BTW: 7D_1.4_ 400mm = ~896MM - I am a little excited.

Mark, that is the best moon shot I've seen on CiC and maybe the best one I've ever seen! All that detail! It makes me wonder.... HHHmmmm...

Would it be possible to get a shot like that, weather permitting, for each night of the moon's phases? The craters are most wonderously displayed at the edge of the line that separates day from night. What if you could combine the band of craters along that line for multiple images? Could you could map the entire moon in sharp relief? All the craters, not just the craters that lie along that line in a single image. I'd be willing to bet that the result would be spectacular! I'd love to have a lens like that just to see if it could be done!

I wonder if I could possibly find enough sharp images of the moon in the web? Probably not. Most images on the web are posted at pathetic resolutions out of fear. Still, it's an interesting concept. Great image!

Thanks for the nice comments. Frank, I'm pretty sure you could do what you suggest. It would be a challenge to get l the exposures similar and would of course depend on weather a lot.

Very good image of the moon. I was expecting some superb eclipse images from you and probably an animation.

Frank, I think you can do that with the long tubes you have. You may have to begin a day or two before the new moon and continue to full moon and beyond. The waning crescent shows some craters on the edge better. At least that is what I have seen through a telescope. There are other problems like change in the size of the disk (and crescent) as the month progresses or the position of the moon in the sky as it moves eastward and its wobble.
BTW this January moon is called Wolf Moon, so be careful

Good point, Ramachandran! I'll have to give it a try but I've never even come close to Mark's rendition so I suspect that there is more to it than just slapping on the extension tubes and snapping away. However, I'll never know if I don't try.
