    Need Free Photo Sharing site

I am looking for a free photo sharing site to share several hundred photos with family members. My requirements are:

    1. Has to be totally private
    2. Site keeps photo in original size (apx. 2-3 MB each)
    3. Capable of letting family download photos and save to PC so they can print them at their desired photo processing company.

I have checked out these sites:

Shutterfly, Snapfish, Walgreens: Meets requirements 1 & 2. Can only print from their company.

Flickr: Meets requirements 1 & 2. When you set to private no one can download the photos except me.

Google Picasa: Meets requirements 1 & 2. Will only let you print from your PC, Shutterfly, LifePics, Walgreens, Printed Art, fotoflot, Snapfish, Ritzpix.

I wanted something relatively simple, but can't seem to find anything. I don’t like Facebook so that is out of question, although I did look into setting up a private group on Facebook, but it seems that FB downsizes the photos.

I thought about a personal blog site, but can these be totally private?

    Any suggestions? Thanks!

I like Flickr, you can even make it so people cant view your photos at all. You can still link your photos to sites with out allowing your flickr album being viewable.

    Or option 2

If your family members have a flickr account you can allow only "Family" to view the photos.

I must be doing something wrong. I sent invitation by email to family member and they could see the photos, but could not download them.

Click an image and it will get larger, then at the top it should get even larger... The person should be able to right click and "save images as"..

Re: Need Free Photo Sharing site

I receive a daily Question and Answer posting from this guy:

    http://www.timgrey.com/

Today's article was about using Box.com for sharing photos.

While it was originally set up for sharing music file (I believe - correct me if wrong), it can be used to share photos too.

For example anyone can download and play this file from my free BOX site:

    http://www.box.com/s/k2bkenambkix2nc56pvc

It's an mp3 music file, but could just have easily been a RAW file, a JPEG file, or any other electronic file format (spreadsheet, CAD drawings, word processor file, pdf, etc).

    Here is a photo example:

    http://www.box.com/s/uyhye2994oqa6a17ge0n

By selecting and clicking on the song (or image) in my Box.net folder, I copied a link to the song, pasted the link in CiC, and you can now have it. You can listen to it, or you can save it. Save it by clicking on the "Download" box with the blue arrow.

I can provide as many or as few files as I wish. If I don't provide you with a link to it, you can't see it or get it.

    Glenn

PS - it's using the "cloud" concept.

PPS - there doesn't seem to be a file size limit:

    http://www.box.com/s/fir6hohdf7kim04a6off

The free total storage limit is 50 GB - that's a lot of 21 MB files.

    Hi Jeannie,

I'm with Rob on this one. flickr is easy to use, quite well organised and your first 200 photos are hosted for free. The only downside is I think there is an upload limit per month and I can't remember what that limit is, sorry.

And to prove Rob's point above, as long as you've got access (and permission!) to the image you can then do as he says above to then print on your family members computer.

Just to prove the point (He's gonna kill me for this!) I've downloaded one of Rob's rather superb pictures to show off here,

    Need Free Photo Sharing site

and to show how easy is.

    Sorry Rob!

HAHAH! Thanks Mark! The free flickr account "Videos are limited to 90 seconds in length, and 150MB in filesize"

Also If you do Facebook, Twitter, or blog, it has an upload "Share" button to upload to one of those.

    300MB/mo.

With a free Flickr account, all your photos are hosted for free, but only the first 200 will be visible on the Flickr website in your "stream". And only the smaller sizes are accessible, not the full-sized files. Full-size is stored, however, in case you upgrade to a Pro account. And, uploading full-sized images will still count against your bandwidth quota.

You do not need to have your family sign up to Flickr and get accounts, though, to share "private" or "family only" or "friends only" photos. Flickr also allows guest passes, where you can mail a link to someone, and they will be given special access through that URL. The Guest Pass can be for your entire stream, or a single set of images.

Re: Need Free Photo Sharing site

But, Mark, the file size is only 240 x 160. But what an adorable photo.

Kathy - That is what I was seeing...only Pro accounts could access the largest files.

Everyone - thanks for the input. I will look it over after I get off work and see if I can figure it out with y'all's helpful comments.

Why does everything have to be so complicated?

    @ Kathy Li & @ Jeannie

    Again, Rob is correct. I have two accounts on flickr. One is for stuff I like to share and generate a bit of interest with (Pro) and the other was for a project recently completed;

Here's the link to an angry little cat obsessed with umbrellas. This is a free account.

Click on any picture. Go to Actions, top left next to favorites above the picture. From the drop down menu pick All Sizes. Choose a size. Right click and save as...

    Tell me if it works.

There is also an option to turn that off, for non contacts....

Re: Need Free Photo Sharing site

    Rob and Mark,

Thanks for taking the time to explain all this, but while the photos are in different sizes....they are smaller than my originals. I don't think you can have the original sizes except in the Pro version. The largest size in the umbrella photos was 720 x 720. Rob's largest photo was 1024 x 681 both quite a bit smaller than my 3072 x 2048. While family members would probably just want 4 x 6 prints, if they wanted to print an 8 x 10 wouldn't the photo size need to be around 1220 x 960 minimum?

While we are on the subject.....doesn't a higher pixel count make for a better photo?
