Brother and Sister - Part 1

I swear the challenges never seem to end. My wife (recently the subject of much controversy ) and I thought it was time to capture some picture of Jasmine with her brother... who is on his way to into turning into a moody teenager like his older brother. So we thought we'd better try and catch some photos now... especially while Snapfish is having a 50% off canvas sale that ends in 2 days time!

Everything was against me today I think. Alex decided to have a friend over. Then the forecast became one of a lot of rain. With the clock against me, when we got back from the beach this morning I decided to use the things that I thought were against me in my favour instead.

I decided to shoot the kids in the rain, while I got Alex's friend to hold an umbrella over my head Being cold, wet and windy, with the kids having wet hair after and choosing their own clothes straight after the beach this morning, things didn't quite go to plan. I have learnt a few things though...

1. It's really hard to get good photos in 5 minutes when kids are complaining of being cold and wet;
2. An umbrella seems like a great idea until you realise how much it gets in the way of the shot you want to take;
3. Kids know as much about complementary colours for family photo shoots as I do... which is not much at all!;
4. Rain seems like a nice background but makes a horrible foreground which seems to require another umbrella in between you and the subject to stop rain drops from obscuring the subject or some knowledge and skill that I am currently aware of (if anyone has any experience with shooting in the rain I'd love some tips!)
5. Placing your kids in a cold and wet environment is one way to get them to stand really close together;
6. 11 year olds don't make bad assistants... until they get bored.

Here are the ones I like the best from this morning - first one is my favourite. My wife has decided that there will be a Part 2 to this story. C&C appreciated.

#1 is excellent. Really captured a natural and spontaneous moment. And I like the negative space to the right. A little desaturation of the yellow channel would make the background hedge less obtrusive, but an excellent shot.



In the last two, I don't think you have enough space at the bottom, as the kids look too low in the scene. But apart from that the shots would also work well

Yep - That first one is a beauty. A shot they'll hopefully love to look at in 30/40 years time.
