All shot today with Canon 5D Mk2 and Sigma 105mm macro, with studio lights. I have to go and prepare some vegetables now.

Thanks, Rob. I'll let you into a secret it was a stacked image. I was pretty close to it and couldn't get it all in focus so I took six shots and stacked them. The things we sad pensioners get up to!

Thanks, Peter. The knife was brand new (bought it yesterday). I was talking to the lady in the amazing hardware shop where I bought it and told her I photographed kitchen tools. She offered for me to come into the shop and shoot some of the stuff they had. Can't do it though - I'd be there for a year and a day.

I know it's a little profligate (especially in these times we live in) but buying small objects specifically for still life often pays off. The peeler was only £8, and it's a beautiful object. When I've finished photographing it my wife will be able to use it to peel potatoes for the rest of her life!

And that statement assures a long life for this thread and the immediate loss of all feminist CiC members.... nice one, Rob

Thanks for the kind words, Bobo. I know people might not agree with this, but there is money to be made with this sort of work.I think manufacturers are looking for something different, something that stands out - especially in these difficult economic times. I'm not a pro, but I like to think that shouldn't hold me back! Or, as Groucho Marx once said "I don't care to belong to a club that accepts people like me as members"

Next up you'll want to know how I attract beautiful women... the answer to that one is that I don't.

As for the lighting. I just use two cheapish studio heads. One behind the subject (for these shots) has a diffuser box, and the second at the front has a white umbrella. The object is placed on a sheet of black perspex which is reflective. I get the perspex from Trent Plastics on ebay, and it's pretty cheap. http://stores.ebay.co.uk/Trent-Plastics

In the last shot I posted (Peeler 1) the black perspex looks grey because I positioned it so the white diffuser mesh is reflected as well. When the flash goes off it makes it look that very nice grey. Clever eh?

The actual lighting and shooting is relatively easy. What's difficult is having the ideas for how something simple and every-day can be shot differently. It just comes to me - normally after a few beers.

I think everything else you can see from the shot below, including the untidy state of my room, which I haven't tidied since I was 12!.
