You know, when I'm taking shots like this I often stop and look at the detritus that's called my 'studio' and some pathetic object sitting on the table and I think 'There is no way that this is going to make a decent shot" But quite often it does. It's a bit like watching a certain movie scene which may have a lot of 'finish' to it, but when you watch the 'how we made it' extra, it often looks so ordinary. Know what I mean?

Very interesting photo! Although it does have, shall we say, a few too many elements in it for it to be a great photo. Nevertheless, I shall one day equip myself with similar elements. Sadly I don't have a spare room to set up a studio; my wife uses it for her painting. But I'm sure she'll let me use the dining table for a few hours.

Doing this type of photography is very stimulating, and is very good for developing skills in composition and lighting. But it does need a surprising amount of physical space, and using another room temporarily can make it a bit tedious. I'm lucky that I have a dedicated room (14x9ft) in the house, but even then I have a lack of space at times.

I know exactly what you mean and conversely what should make for a brilliant shot sometimes fails miserably!
