    ACCEPTING ENTRIES: Mini Competition #793

This is an open-themed competition that is open to all CiC members.

ENTERING. Add your image in a new post below. Make sure to change your post title to a name for your picture (click the "Go Advanced" button). Only one entry per person. For help posting images, go here.

VOTING. When this competition reaches 10 entries, a poll will be automatically added and any member may then vote. After 2 days, voting ends and the winner is determined.

Once voting begins, a new competition will be automatically started.

    Good luck!

Notes: Please do not request feedback or comment on other images until after voting has closed, as it could be unfair to other entrants. Photos must be your own, and never entered into one of our prior competitions. We also ask that only recently taken or edited photos be used as entries (in the spirit of motivating everyone to continually improve).

PS: Make sure to also vote on the previous competition here.

Very close comp, thank you for the votes, I liked this tree the minute I saw it while driving by, and I got very lucky with the cloud formations that day

Congratulations Wendy. Love the tree. I grow Bonsai so when I saw your photo I was immediately attracted to it. The tree has strength, and I felt a strong earthly bond between it and the clouds.Very well done.

    Congrats Wendy. Great capture.

Meant to ask when I first saw the pic - how is the frame done? Thanks.

Thanks Bobo: I don't know if you have Adobe Elements BUT... this is how I do it there. Perhaps this will translate to other software, but somehow I don't think it will.

In Elements after I have resized the image I create a duplicate background layer which needs to be above the original in the layers panel. Also the image has to be in 8 bit mode in Elements (ver 8 anyway) Make sure the copy is selected and then Goto IMAGE > RESIZE > CANVAS SIZE in the menu bar top of screen.

In the popup window select the size. For this one I made sure cm was the unit showing and then typed in .8 for most of my shots I just use a 6 or 8 PIXEL plain black border.

To select the colour there is a dropdown for CANVAS EXTENSION COLOUR at the bottom of the window. You can choose from the colours listed OR if you select OTHER another window will pop up and you can use the eydroper to match up something in the shot. You should now have a frame around your shot. BTW, if you have cropped the image in Elements this does not seem to work. I don't know why and have not spent much time trying to figure it out, because I usually do my cropping in Lightroom.

The drop shadow is selected from the EFFECTS PANEL which on my setup is at the right side of the screen. If it's not there on your setup GOTO WINDOW IN THE MENU BAR and make sure effects is selected/checked and it should show up. Find DROP SHADOWS in the drop down of the Effects Panel and Select the drop shadow effect that you want and then click APPLY. You can APPLY and UNDO until you find the one you like.

To fine tune the drop shadow double click the STYLE SETTINGS ICON to the right of the BACKGROUND COPY in the LAYERS PANEL, which on my setup is just below the Effects menu on the right of the screen. A popup will open and you can modify the size distance and opacity of the drop shadow and apply a glow, bevel or as I have done here a 3 point black stroke.

It sounds rather complicated, but it really isn't. If you have Elements give it a try.
If these instructions are not clear, let me know and I can do some screen snips for visual aids.

Thanks Joe, I love it when a shot has some emotional impact. I'm really happy to hear you liked it.

    Thanks Wendy.

Do not have Elements but think the whole process can be done in PS5. I know about the resize, border creation and drop shadow setting but not the effects one. Will experiment.

Have a great xmas and new year.
