Testing Your Website

I will need to test my web pages as I design them in the major browsers: Internet Explorer 9, Internet Explorer 8, Internet Explorer 7, Internet Explorer 6, the latest versions of Firefox, Opera, Safari and Chrome. Since all these browsers are free anyway, it should not be any hardship to get them and install them. The trick however would be testing with more than one version of Internet Explorer since the later version will overwrite the earlier. Using the emulator/virtual machine method to do this. One way to improve the chances that my website will work in future versions of the web browsers is to make sure the web pages' code validate as correct (that is, the underlying code has no errors). There are numerous free web page validators listed on the Free HTML Validators, Broken Link Checkers, Browser Compatibility Checkers page.

Being more serious, it's difficult; there have been any number of commercial weddings 'togs over the last century or more, so the chances of us coming up with something that's not 'cheesy', much less original, is unlikely :(

If we're not to make a play on your name (and we don't know the second bit), or location (for good reason given), then using a thesaurus for alternatives is about the only possibility.

My full name is Anna Perevertaylo, and us Europeans have no middles names. Location would be state wide. But I'm looking for a cathy domain. It pays to have a domain name that reflects my site of business. Thanks for willing to help me out.

I've used Serif PagePlus for years to build and maintain my work website. As you say, very easy to use, albeit a little basic with some of the earlier versions.

Hi Mike, I'll be updating to WebPlus 5 very soon as it is improving all the time. I dont use Serif for hosting though as I have a good, cheap package elsewhere.

Having been designing websites for quite a few years now without knowing anything about it I orginally found the Office Word 97 programme very useful as more or less what you organised on the page was usually how it looked as a webpage. Sadly Office 2010 Home and Student seems to have dropped this very useful facility to me and added a whole lot of junk to confuse me:(
But I suspect that what you want is far beyond what I will ever manage to produce and so I'll just comment that getting on side with your sister if she caan spare the time, authoring a website is time consuming, but with a warning that it seems to me that webmasters want their sites to be 'special' 'fabulous' and load them up so that they are so big and clumsyly slow loading, CanonUSA and the like are dreadful in this respect. That opinion is based on being on dial-up and I have not had broadband long enough to revise my opinions.

Thanks for your take on this, I already decided on my domain/biz name, which is my full name with "photography" at the end. I have my photos posted on here, feel free to take a look. I met up with a logo designer and I think we nailed it! http://www.flickr.com/photos/25251025@N04/

But for now my website is just there to reserve my name, I think using flickr is fine for me right now. I'm keeping my options open.

Squidgy suggests using Flash. I'd certainly not recommend Flash because Adobe has announced that it is ceasing development of Flash. Usually, this means the end of support in several years. Ultimately, the very last version of Flash won't be supported by any contemporary browser. That's not a good thing because you can't personally control the browser version of potential viewers of your website.

Instead, I'd suggest getting with the program (actually getting your sister to get with the program) and learn the new capabilities in HTML5 and CSS3.

My general rule is that when somebody says something is going away and/or that it will not be supported after a given date, I start learning whatever the replacement is. I've had instances where my students haven't adhered to my rules about what's allowed in their projects, including the rule about you'll receive a grade reduction of 20 points on any project (applied after the project grade is assigned) that violates the minimum level of requirements for the project. In US terms, that means a C instead of an A, as one example. It gets them to think in terms of how long a life any given project will have on the web and that's a hugely important thing.

I have at least one website that I built approximately 15 years ago and that, except for updates of images to more recent ones (including a new version of their logo) and updates of text content, basically is unchanged because I was careful about these kinds of issues. For it to work when HTML5 is the only allowed standard is probably going to require less than half a day to upgrade.

I did not know also what wordpress stands for, but now I know there are two. One is wordpress.com and the second is wordpress.org. One is free and the other cost money. Template makers mostly use the paid one, because of the many options.
