Do you plan to show the immigrants in context of the work they are doing or just as you have posted these?
Thank you Steve :)
I was planning to make - shall I say - "compositions" with the images of people and the house where they live. Well, not exactly.
Let me try to explain a little more.
I hope to be able to take a picture of the living room where people live, their home actually. With the seat/sofa empty. Empty ? I really don't know yet if the sofa will be empty or with them.
In fact I have already - of this family - made the convenient pictures. With and without them.
It didn't come out very well. I don't like it that much. Or I don't even like it. However, I have the possibility of re-shooting if I want. I know they will cooperate. :) Lucky me :)
Along with the images of the people I would place the house they live in. In the same frame. I have to think it over. I have studied the work this afternoon for a while but no solution so far.:o
In the context of their work would be a great idea. It is actually but very hard to accomplish. Permits, authorisations, bla, bla, ble, ble, you know.
In the context of authorizations I have been asking a hospital for 7 month now to make a theme I would like to. :p
I am almost giving up.
Another one from this young girl. Do you think there is too much light on her face ? Have I overdone the blur ? I don't think so, but...

That sounds very interesting and you are fortunate to have a family that are so helpful:)
I sympathise with you in getting permission to shoot at a workplace. I know the rings my company has to run around to get permission to use images of our staff at a customer's building:(
Regarding the girl. I don't think their is too much light on her face because the brighter spots balance well with the small amount of white clothing in view. If you were to reduce the highlights on the face I think her T shirt would look too bright in comparison, all aginst the grey background.
It is a shame about the hair going across her face but maybe it adds to the informal nature of the subject. You will know more about that than me:)
I still love her eyes. I think she would make an awesome subject to shoot in her own right.:D
Re: NON Square Cropped Portraits - (nSCP's) - please post them here
Thank you Steve. :)
However, these are portraits without soul. These are plain, straight portraits. Anyone could do this.
These are not excellent portraits. These are just portraits.
The kind of portraits I like to shoot are those when there is a meaning in them, a feeling, an emotion. That's why I like so much photojournalism shots.
Seen the images from Somalia ? Dramatic ! Strong ! And others not to mention the photos from the riots...
But perhaps the one I have done will be well integrated in a theme, where other information is available and complement the concept.
Thank you for your comments Steve. Have a nice working week :)

I agree but if anyone can give these images more meaning, I think it is you:)

I like to look at these images (I follow the NY Times Photo on Twitter), I would even fancy attempting such photography but perhaps just the peacefull locations for now as I don't like being shot at:eek::)

Many thanks, Steve. He is growing up indeed.
This is taken as you noticed with a very wide aperture (Canon 85mm f/1.2 L at f/1.2).
Cheers,
Ali

I have the same lens:) A sound investment. It stays so sharp even at f1.2:)

The DOF and bokeh are really exceptional. Not only in quality but in price :D:D
Even the vignetting is excellent which I think you introduced in purpose.
However Alis what puzzles me here is the dark area on his chest, the shadow of his hand. Perhaps a little too strong competing with the black area of the hair.
Am I being too pickle ?
And Ali ... TFPH :D:D:D

Thanks, Antonio!
Pickle? I don't think so; you just "relish" commenting on my pictures ;)
You are right about the dark area. I did not notice it before. I think however I need a more sophisticated lighting setup to take care of that. This I did with just one flash and the wireless Pocket Wizard.

When I saw your excellent image yesterday Joanne Van Praag, I tried to do something similar. What do you think of my work ? :)
Not so good at your I know but...
Your turn now... :p Be as honest as I am please. :)

A local resident of La Chatre, she graciously agreed to an impromptu study shot.
Is this a portrait? I don't know.
But, she is a woman who is clearly very comfortable in her surroundings.

But of course it is a portrait !!! :)
What pleases me here is the treatment with HDR you gave to the picture.
It's dam sharp and clear. I like that. At the distance at least, the old lady doesn't have any skin strange colour or cast. :)
When I said at the distance I was meaning as small as she is in the portrait. :)
