I figured I would get an early start to this weeks entry. I have to work this Saturday. So this week I got to combine two things I really like....Cars and pictures. A friend asked me to help put in his engine back in his Porsche. Now as you may know a Porsche 930 has its motor and transmission held in with only 4 bolts. Easy right? Its just 4 bolts....

Our first task was to attach the transmission back onto the engine.

    Task one complete:

Here is a shot of its home:

Sliding the engine under the car, then setting the car back down:

    Project 52 by Ryo

Its a slow process and there is not much room for error:

Finally car is back down on the jack stands, engine is bolted up, engine jack is removed, time to start bolting up the half shafts:

    Project 52 by Ryo

Engine in, half shafts bolted up now for all the fun bits, like the clutch cable, throttle cable and all the hoses and wires:

Stay tuned I did get some good shots that I need to sit back and edit. As continuing note I did very little post on this set of photos, ACR, Levels, crop. I have noticed that I need a better ultra wide lens, I shot these with my 25mm and with greasy fingers, I set it to auto mode.

    Thanks
    Ryo

That's the version I prefer. Looking forward to seeing more the porsche. My eldest is hoping to get some work experience and possibly an apprenticeship as a mechanic with them.

Got up early to shoot some pics of the BMW; unfortunately it was overcast, but the light was workable. Set up on a tripod with the 45-150mm. I did not like the color versions, so I did BW:

Riding back this morning, I rushed to get this:

I should have grabbed the 45-200, and the tripod, but I didnt think about it as I ran out of the house. Its almost there, but lacking a bit of detail I wanted in the moon.

    Thanks

Took a little artistic license with this one, but it goes as part of the NJ Air show:

    Two from today.

    Construction Destruction:

    And After the Storm:

Imaged both in HDR, than added "dragan effect" essentially a high pass with some muting of color.

    Thanks

    Hi Ryo,

I like the two aircraft shots from yesterday, especially the composition on the Herc. engines.

Bit late in posting, I haven't touched camera in about a week. But I did have my phone for these two. I do enjoy looking up at the sky, I am going to have study the best way to capture the depth of the clouds.

NJ has some really cool cloud formations through out the year. These were two of the more interesting keyhole shots that I saw this week.

    Thanks

As the weeks roll together, and time moves forward... I just returned from a mini-holiday in Maine. The first day out we went to see the York Harbor Lighthouse. It is possibly the most photographed on the east coast. Here is my take on it and how to salvage a overcast day....

This was a rolling shot, through the windshield in traffic. I was really pleased with how it turned out.

Fun little guy set up camp in the back yard:

    Project 52 by Ryo

Cropped, BW duplicate layer, set to multiply, dropped in a vib/sat layer to pull some of the color.

    Thanks

Hi Ryo! My feeling is that if the spider is the subject of the composition, in most cases you'll want to be large enough in the image to be easily seen.

In this case, the large sharp lines of the object in the upper left and despite being out of focus, the red, green and blue objects being as large as they are, still compete significantly with the spider for attention.

    Hope this helps!

    Re: Project 52 by Ryo

Not so much the spider but the web, I was trying to get the shot lower but with the sun rising I could not get the angle I really wanted. Great insight on the elements, It always helps to get another set of eyes and helpful feedback. I happened to have the image open still and was working a BW, I think it captures your points.

Worked two layers of gradients on set to overlay and the other set to darken.

I was going to work an HDR but I bumped the camera and the ghosts were to much to handle. So I ran a single image, cropped, added a gradient, slight muting in vib/sat, and painted back in the reds.

Hi Ryo, I just noticed post # 71 and forgetting the sky for the moment (sometimes these things just don't cooperate), I love the details of the wave you have been able to pick out in the Mono version. Were you able to get the foreground and background in this image with DoF alone or did you have to blend two images to get this level of sharpness?

  18. #78

    Re: Project 52 by Ryo

Frank, single shot @ f7.1, DOF was almost able to capture it, in the colored version you may notice the lighthouse is slightly OOF. Part of my processing in the original was to dodge/burn to give the entire image a bit more pop. When done correctly it has a side effect of sharpening things a bit. I had done the dodge burn with the intent of converting to BW, and giving the transformation the best possible range. Here is the SOOC:

Nice shot of the lighthouse in York, Maine. Those of us native to that area call it The Nubble Light. Well done Ryo.
