I boldly jumped into CS5 from the free Canon DPP.
Shoot in raw and DPP already gave me enough for day to day shooting, editing, basic correction....

It is only last Christmas, Staples offer $ 200 reduced on the list price!!! and I can't resist the temptation.

With 3 books ( one is solely for Camera Raw and one solely for layer) along side, lots of U tube, hours before the computer try out every exercies in the book.
Less sleep now, and haven't touch my camera for the last 3 weeks!!
But right away, love the layer stuff.
I experienced a very steep learning curve.

But whenever I see any poster out there, I know that I can make it with CS5 too!!!
this make the money well, worth spend.

and also need to learn back all the details around Camera Raw in the CS5!!

$ 549 CAD after sale is not little but reasonable amount, more important it is a program can take me for many years with better post editing and creativity.

If a 70-200 F2.8L IS USM is $ XXXX, CS5 is not that expensive indeed!! right?

My own experience in choosing this program. I watch a lot of YOu tube to see what CS5 can do and I decided I want to be able to the same things.
Is not comparing between different program.

and like photography equipments, there is no end.
CS5 partner is Wacom Ituso 4...... or second monitor....... on and on.......
IF you put time on it, play it out, get some nice result, every dollar worth!!!

    enjoy.

For many of us, Bill, I'm afraid it is a choice of one or the other.

Or in my case, settling for the F4 lens and only buying one of the more expensive purchases per year.

However, as I have said previously, CS5 is basically a 'stand alone programme' which, for many users, will provide all that you need without having to purchase extra add on software, so that does mitigate the cost a little.

Incidentally, I understand that CS5 Extended also has the ability to edit video files but I've never seen any information about how this works. Although admittedly I haven't done any Googling for information.
