    Re: Castle in the mirror

Congrats Holger, by far the best shot here (and around ;-)
I wonder, is it a 1-shot photo or very good HDR?

    Re: Castle in the mirror

I was a FIT and Aloha fan today. Good use of an extremely shallow DoF for Chris and a beautifully executed long fog exposure for Igor. I sort of wondered how that would look with a color balance leaning more toward the blue end of the spectrum, but even as, there is a great white on the bike and clean blacks throughout.

It's not that I thought the winning photo wasn't deserving, as much as it was that I couldn't find what it is I was supposed to focus on...my eye just moved all over the place trying to find that one place where it could rest and say..."ahhhhhh."

Nice scene; good, sharp focus, but in general, with only a few very well executed HDR's, it is simply not at all my cup of tea. While Hosch's was a pretty decent HDR, I didn't see where its use "made" the image "better," just different.

As always, it is simply my opinion.

    Re: Castle in the mirror

Interesting thoughts of MiniChris. The one especially deserves mentioning, regarding Holger's photo:
"my eye just moved all over the place trying to find that one place where it could rest and say..."ahhhhhh.""
Well, we all "know" that photo "should" lead your eyes to the "final destination" and that's the ultimate goal. Is it? Let's think about it.
Looking at the Holgers's photo it just pops up into my eyes, and stays there as a whole. Than my eyes try to find details, and there are plenty of them there. And than once again my eyes look at the whole. Some photos are just like that - a whole. That's my opinion and maybe an invitation for a wider debate ;-)

Or, maybe it's just plain old memory: when I saw MiniChris's photo I said: "Wow, this competition will gonna be interesting". Then came Fit whit another interesting photo (I also have a very similar one here: https://picasaweb.google.com/1080376...08034580447970), then Big Pix and suddenly there were three photos competing for my attention. After a while came Holger, his photo poped up and I said, that's it. Plain stupid memory with a finite number of dynamic variables?

What others think? Lay your cards on the table ;-)

    Re: Castle in the mirror

I could have observed this as a whole image if it wasn't for the curve on the left part of the frame. That's an eye-pusher and when my eye is forceably pushed, I want it to go someplace firm and hold my attention..and it didn't because as my eye went to the far right part of the frame, abruptly stopping at the bright part of the wall next to the stairs.....and then I went in reverse, and back, and...

The two bright areas are too far apart to be of use because the area they border doesn't have any one thing of greater interest to dwell on. It is a good photograph by almost every measure but the area I see as a problem - but as I said earlier, this is just one opinion.

I was going to leave this alone but after looking at the photo again, I thought perhaps a better explanation was needed...I am always far more visual than verbal.

In the color coded copy of his print, note there are five distinct areas of brightness as indicated in blue. The purple highlight is the one point each of the two sets of white lead to and from. For me, that purple area just isn't strong enough to grab and hold my attention and the blue (highlight areas) are too bright and too numerous to been seen as one "whole" area of individual attention. I love a good argument..more from others, please.
