As a personal growth exercise I (finally) decided to attend a basic photography workshop. It's amazing how much improvement can come from simply understanding a camera.

So very true. And it is the case that once you are in full command of the camera and feel you do understand it fully, your attention can switch from the technical aspects of operating the camera and using it to its full potential, to concentrating on the more aesthetic elements such as composition. Then you will see the quality of your work take a large step forward again.
