Spotted this guy sittin on the bank of LK. Washington across from me. Well the challenge was on! I ended up laying on the bank 8-9 ft from him and against the same log he was perched on. Slow and steady does the trick.
ISO 100 F6.3 @ 1/80sec 250mm
I moved around a bit and changed angles but was limited. The time span over these shots was about 30+min. Hence the change of light. Sun going in and out of cloud cover.
ISO 200 F5.6 @ 1/500sec 300mm
This one I took after he finally tired of me and flew away. I tracked him down and this was one of two more I managed.
ISO 200 F5.6 -1.7ev @1/500sec 300mm

Very good Paul,
Reminds me of when Rebecca and I went to the locks at Caen Hill, there was a heron there, which we moved in on slowly, but s/he was across the water from us and it was muddy, so we didn't get down flat, nor as close, as you have.

Thought it may be fun and possibly of intrest to show where I spotted him from, the surroundings and where I shot from. The partialy covered stump to the far right is what I leaned against. I was positioned between he and the stump.

Bobo, I have found that with the budget 75-300 I have to work as much on my stalking as I do anything else. I hope to some day get the 70-400G. These shots are not cropped to zoom, only to clean an edge or two.

You must have been in a serious "stealth mode" for that Heron to let you
weasel in that close..
The heron's around here are a bit on the cheeky side.....one wrong move
and they take-off..

LOL Thanks, and....Yes Mike, that was the mode of the day.
I find I can only do that if they are in a spot that they feel secure. Usually on a limb overhanging water or like this on on structure surrounded by water. Had he been on land I am sure he would have not let me get within 20yrds.

These are really very good. I love the tones, especially in the second one. Great job, there. One "let" me get close one time...I felt like he thought I wasn't a threat. Sat there with him for about an hour while he fished....then a car stopped and he flew away....I was sad about that.....
