I think punching up the contrast and saturation was a good idea, as well as removing the bird. The horizon cuts pretty much in the middle (the building also is a middle sitter) - if this image has been cropped and you have some pixels to work with, you might want to try committing to either the foreground or sky, and I suspect it could use a very slight clockwise leveling. Nice image overall

I like the context shot Jack and while I like the edit and agree somewhat with the comments so far I still lean towards the original with it's bleak wintry colours.
Then there's the composition which may have been better following the rules thirds and horizons and all. I can't argue that those things MIGHT have made this a better shot, but I still really like it just the way it is showing the land going off on either side with the lone man made structures almost centred.
It's one of those shots that can be cropped and recomposed and reworked any which way and still look good because of the subject matter

Jack I like your line #2 the best, the immensity of it, is the story that I tell to myself, those who are not use to such vastness need something to focus on, thus wanting to crop everything to bring them closer to what they are use to. The shack and broken wind powered pump to me are secondary to the open vastness, of the country side adding a sense of forgotten times.
