The more I looked at this, the more I felt it needed a little more space and contrast as it seemed to be a bit cramped.



Any better? ...or did I make it worse?

Yea, still coping with the issue of how to make the subject stand out effectively against a close and busy background. On one hand there is lots of interesting things to see in an image like this and on the other, the busyness doesn't give good separation or a good place for the eye to rest.

Frank, I know what you mean. I took quite a few shots in Alaska on the permafrost, and they are like this, very busy, and I have not successfully edited them to my liking. I will be watching to see what you do with yours. I think my main problem was that on such a close shot, it's hard to get good focus on everything on the lichen because of the shallow
DOF.
