What Monitor

I plan to purchase a new computer and monitor in the near future and need advice on what type of monitor to puchase. I know I want at least a 23 inch monitor but no idea what brand. Of course working with a tight budget for purchase.

The Dell Ultra Sharps have been coming up in the top group for a few years now. They seem to have good value and will be the first one I look at when mine eventually fails. Check around on line, (google "best 23 monitor 2012" ) for a starting list. IPS type monitors are supposedly the best to look. Google that too if you'd like an explanation.

I'm pleased with my HP LP2475w 24" IPS monitor. I bought it in November, 2008 for $583. B&H lists it for $529.
I've calibrated/profiled it several times with a Spyder 2.

I'm currently using a 17" laptop with 1680 x 1050 resolution
I'm planning on getting a larger monitor at some point over the next few months and I'm probably going to go with a Dell U2711
One of the things that has struck me about monitors is that you have to go to 27" before the resolution rises above 1920 x 1280 because all the 21" to 25" monitors are at that resolution (primarily related to DVD / 1080p viewing, I guess)
As you move to bigger monitors, before the jump to 2560 horizontal res, the pixel pitch drops... even at 27" 2560 x 1440 the pixel pitch is 0.234 mm compared to 0.218mm on a 17" 1680 x 1050 screen.

Of course, that may not matter... although I imagine 1920 x 1200 on a 24" screen, at a pixel pitch of 0.269mm (just under 4 pixels/mm), may look less sharp than a screen with a pitch of 0.234mm, I don't really know how much difference it would really make to photo processing.

judithgap, i use an eizo color edge cg223w monitor. the color representation is excellent. very easy to calibrate also. a very good monitor for post processing( i use elements 9) because of its ease of operation and good enhancement options in raw or raw conversion. ps- i moved from tally to tennessee 6 years ago.
