Jason - I'm wondering if you stuck around until the sun had actually gone down? What was it like then?
I just wonder if, with the sun still up, it becomes too dominant, we lose any detail in the land and we don't see the sky as spectacularly as it might have been after the sun was down.

hi donald i will try that next time as the sun has just gone down over the horizon,it was ten mins before sunset

I think that's a good idea. The 'golden hour' and hour before and an hour after sunset are when you get the most spectacular colours in the sky.
Because you're shooting then, you often need longer exposures. So, if it's something you want to concentrate on and you don't already have one, then you should think about saving for a good tripod.
