Has anyone heard of Canon's newest lens with built in 1x4 extender, 200-400mm f/4 L IS USM Extender 1x4? I've heard they may release it in August for end of the year purchase. This sounds like what I need for my bird photography.

It's not a rumour exactly it was announced officially last year: http://www.dpreview.com/news/2011/2/7/canon200400mm
As to why it still isn't out then that is a bit kf a mystery.

Given that it will require the same size front element to the 300 f2.8 ($7300) and 400 f4 DO ($6100), a good guess for the lens would be in the region of $8000-10000. Nikon's 200-400 is $7000.
Big lenses are not cheap. I think it makes you want them even more.

Of the three new lenses Canon introduced : this one, 24mm and 28mm f/2.8 IS lenses... This is the only one which excites me!
However, a hobbyist would have to be independently wealthy to buy this lens...
OTOH: My 70-200mm f/4L IS, 300mm f/4L IS, 400mm f/5.6L lenses and my 1.4x TC probably totally weight just about what this big guy weighs and, probably, together, don't cost a fraction of what this lens costs...
