Automobile 101

Bit bored today, so I grabbed a photo and started editing, here is an example of how much you can touch up an image:

Chopped the roof (looking for a stylized look), added some more to the left side of the image (attempting to balance the image a bit), set the levels (helped bring out the car a bit, and kill some of the blown out highlights), Dodged and burned (bring the sides of the car to a new level), dropped in a white gradient (to drop the hopper out of interest).

That is post-processing work that I'm sure many could learn from. Nothing too complicated that anyone can learn. But what a difference it makes.

Donald I am proof positive that a good post processing finishes the photo!

Got a challenge from my fellow photographer to come up with a well edited shot, that give the impression of real, but kinda sureal...

Tasman Revival 2012

This Lister Jaguar was built for the Race of Two Worlds in 1958. It was slow and heavy, but the workmanship was VERY beautiful and it drew a lot of attention. The owner driver was Rod Jolley said it had given him many years of pleasure...

A Lola T70 CANAM Car brought over from Boulder Colorado a very special car for us in OZ who never got to see a CANAM race which was so dominated by Bruce Maclaren and Denny Hulme. There was an M8 there but I will put it up separately if good enough.

I struggle with photographing cars there is so much technical stuff to think of and arrange, and I really like looking at the cars, so I tend to only do these special occasions.

I too think the simplicity of the angle and composition makes Ryo's Plymouth impressive. I like it.
It was rude of me to ignore Ryo's Plymouth, because I was impressed with it and rather than comment it set me to try to solve the colour issues with my Brabham shot. You will see that the aqua colour of the car is really well differentiated from the blue of the sky and the cream or off white colour is pure it isn't carrying reflected blue from the sky. My Brabham has a similar body colour, but the white around the Brabham name is heavily reflecting the blue of the sky. I played with it for a while but I will have to open it in PS to solve the problem with layers.
Hmm I notice my images have turned into question marks is this just an issue with TinyPics or something I have done?

This Renault F1 car was displayed at Chatsworth House, Derbyshire during the weekend 9-10 June 2007. I suspect it would have been the 2005 or 2006 race car, or one of them, so most likely driven by Alonso in his World Championship seasons. I have put a duplicate B&W layer on and painted only the car back in. The event was by invitation only to try out Renault cars. (I tried a Scenic just to see if they were all as bad as my sister-in-law's, which they weren't).

I did paint back in a lady on the right of one of them sat on an invalid's eletro buggy. That was Freda Forsyth, a dear departed relative and friend. Despite having suffered paralysis of her left side from 32 she was game for anything and loved fast cars and boats; she was looking at this one wistfully and yearning for someone to take her around in it.

I did try to cloned out the restraining wires but with the reflections in the highly polished paintwork it looked so very messy I left them in.

These were taken with a Kodak DX6490 4Mp 10x zoom.

@ Graham, there must have been some glorious exhaust noises there!! I really like the action shots!

@ Keith, nice choice on BW the background to pull focus to the subject. As for the offending wires, a skilled hand and several cloning methods can take them out. Best approach I have found is to let photoshops magic wand do most of the big stuff, start by breaking the wire up into sections, after removing 70-80% then slowly clone out the harder bits.

This was kinda fun shot, I could see in-camera the DOF based on the ridges in the grill. I really wanted the RAMBLER to pop but none of my editing tricks could bring it to the level I wanted. :(

There were some really impressive noises there. The trouble is that we have really restrictive noise regulations here and so many of the beautiful sounds are muffled. For instance the Eagle had silencer elements in its exhaust diffusers, such sacrilege.
Meanwhile we had the drag cars in the distance over powering the music. I did walk into a garage with 5 F5000 cars warming up. Now that was impressive.

Re the Rambler some times the ideas don't work first time. Some of the American cars of that period do look like they want to eat you though.

Hi Keith,
Nice trick to keep the attention on the important elements when you have such depth of field. The cars from that year were much prettier than the current batch of F1 cars.
Mind you I am aware that they are not in a beauty contest and that the beauty is their mastery of going fast. I love the simplicity of the aerodynamic devices.

Hey, lovely shot, and it brings a lump to my throat: I bought one of these for £60 in 1967 - fantastic car to drive, despite the steering column aimed lethally at your heart ... sold it with great reluctance. One of the great long-distance cruisers of the 50s.

Found this poor old relic on a walk today. Very sad, it would have been someones pride and joy once and in true Aussie fashion a car is not totally wrecked until you shoot it full of holes :o
Not sure of the make, perhaps someone might be able to pick it from the front grill.

@ Greg we have the same issue here in the States, a car is not complete without bullet holes! Great shots like Donald said lovin the rust colors.

@ Jon that Chrysler has some curves great shots!! On the C&C side they look a bit under exposed.

Total of about 9 layers, normal work flow on import from ACR, layer to sharpen, set to luminosity, clean up the trees and building, add in the clouds and a mask, work the clouds mask and set levels to match foreground, Merge down all the layers, Clean up the colors, drop in a photo filter on deep blue, add a new layer, bring up the midtones and highlights, set to Luminosity, Merge down again, and Dodge and burn to taste. To easy right?
