Finally got out with my camera today and went to the local lake to see if I could get some birds in flight. I took a bunch and still sorting through them. Nothing tremendously interesting, lots of gulls and ducks... But this one caught my eye right away. Obviously, not a classic flying bird but I thought it was a really interesting image.

Yes it is certainly different, but I think it lacks impact due to its small size here - assuming you didn't crop wildly, what are the chances of seeing it 2.5 timess bigger? - don't forget to do the post downsize sharpening though, or it'll look soft at that size.

While the first one is interesting and I have looked a couple times, I do like the second a bit more. Well caught and nice and sharp.

A flying headless bird - that's scary.
Ideally, I would have liked a bit of background with these, but not too heavy so it overwhelms the delicateness of the feathers.
But the basic shots have worked out fine.

Geoff, it was one of those days when the sky was plain flat gray. No cloud formations, no definition, boring flat gray. For that reason, I lightened in pp to bring out the natural light in the feathers and went for the light key feel. I figured if the background wasn't going to give me anything, I might as well make it a cleaner colour.
