    Sorry I haven't been available to respond. To separate the skaters from the background you can place yourself in an area where the background is farther away than the shot you took. It appears to be in a corner where they were close to the stands. Perhaps at the end of a straight-away where they might be further from the boards?? A brighter flash on the skaters will also darken the background.

    Hey, thanks Brian, and Andrew. Great advice again. The only reason I chose this spot to shoot, was because this is where a lot of the action happens most of the time. On the straight-aways, they often just try to build up speed. But I will keep trying - thanks again guys, I really appreciate the time.
