I thought "Covered in Fog" has this wrapped. I liked Cakey's rose, but felt the crop could have been much tighter...a lot of interesting images in this comp.

wow... 3 winners. Well done all.

Chris. Your picture is one of the winners. As I'm a newbie in this game can you explain please what you seen that made you take a picture of it. It's obviously good or people wouldn't vote, it's just I don't get what everyone is seeing. Is it the tones and comp?

    Re: Poison

I never know for sure what people see in my work unless they make specific comments. For me, the shot was about a static backdrop against moving water. I liked how the longer exposure created a rippling effect in the water while picking up the reflective values of the wall. The blue dock was simply a break in the action; something to create more visual tension than the water and wall.

Compositionally, it holds close to a 4:3 ratio which is generally pleasing to the eye, though I generally crop to where I think it looks pleasant and don't worry much about convention.

As to your not seeing it...I rarely see anyone's pics they way they think I should or could with the exception of a few folks on here. Donald MacK, Dave Humphries or Colin Southerland are always pretty much spot on. That doesn't necessarily equate to my liking them (their shots), only that I understand the intent. There are quite a few more, but if I list all, I'll surely leave someone out. Most times any of us point a camera at a subject, it's a crap shoot as to the end result....sometimes you get exactly what you were looking for as I did in this shot. I was playing with my .9 GND filter for expressly this type of long exposure under "normal" lighting.

Not sure what I've said makes sense, but it is what it is...and so it goes.

    Thank you for explaining.
How many seconds would that have been? I'd like to try long exposure.

F:/22 @ 5 seconds, ISO 100, GND .9, -1 EV compensation. About 7 am on an overcast day.

This is where the GND in RAW doesn't work.

    Re: Poison

Well done guys. Chris, your picture is technically spot on: the colours, tone and detail are as good as it gets. The reason I like the photograph is because of the unknown. Was your tripod in the sea, and were you wet to chest high to get this shot. Also the light patterns on the water are not the 'standard' blurring you can get with long exposures. It got me asking if they had been 'drawn' or highlighted during post processing.

This was a cracking competition though, bp's breaking wave is a great capture and again, he has worked the light over the top of the wave well. However, for me though Poison gets it: rich, beautiful great DoF and exposure.

Dave, you may want to have a look at some books by Michael Freeman: The Photographer's Vision and The Photographer's Mind explore creative attitudes to photography. Another good resource is the Royal Photographic Society (www.rps.org), I'm currently working towards one of their distinctions and the discipline this provides is a good way to learn.

And of course there is this community - I was introduced by a colleague. Frankly the guys on here are more than helpful. Chris spotted problems I was having with my monitor calibration, Donald helped me with sharpening up my RAW images during post processing and when you put a picture up for review you get good, balanced feedback.

Thanks for that Mark. I'll try The Photographer's Mind first.
