I didn't think of them as particularly dark. I just liked the lightning bolt as a reflective surface.

The heavy vignette in the top left corner, seems to have more of an effect a creating a sense of darkness than in the other two. Perhaps becuase it is also quite dark in the centre of the splash as well?
What I do like is the richness of the tones that are in the images as a result of the lighting.
