Shot tonight as a bit of a "wind down" at the end of a hard week. Lost my spirit level when it got knocked off the camera hot-shoe into the tide too

Well I wasn't going mention it, but actually, we Canonites have quite a few focusing screens available to us (including ones with grids), but I usually use the electronic grid with Live View (I think that some Nikons even have that now)

Seriously (for a moment), you can't use the view finder for those kinds of shots, unless you want to lie down on wet boulders (the camera is about 12 to 18 inches above the ground, with waves surging in) (to give the mist effect) - and even then it's too dark to see anything with a lot of my shots.

Liveview is "OK", but you have to setup the shot before the shutterspeed increases to longer than 30 seconds; after that there's not enough gain for liveview to be able to show anything (it would have worked OK here because this was only 9x 10 sec to 13 sec shots) ...

... after that it's the hotshoe bubble level or "best guess" (more of the latter I suspect until I replace it!).

I've used a GND to balance the sky and foreground ... I could have used an ND but multi-minute shots like this are risky, so it's "safer" to just shoot regular exposures and combine them (assuming no water on the lens) - so this was 9 exposures that varied in length between 10 and 13 seconds with the light fading fast, it's easier to just leave the camera on AV mode).

It was just a last-ditch effort to capture something that evening - my 1st and 2nd planned locations didn't pan out due to conditions.

I wasn't planning on keeping it, but I'm warming to it slowly.

I know this sounds a little arrogant, but honestly, shots like that aren't hard - it's just 2 or 3 standard techniques put together (positioning with WA lenses, positioning GND filters, combining multiple exposures) (and of course having the right lenses / filters etc in the first place).

Quite likely just the image - after all, the image you see here contains only about 4% of the info of the original (I'll send you a full resolution *.TIFF if you like)

As usual, amazing shot! I love the way you get so many colours into the photo without anything seemingly blowing out. The waves on the rocks creating that 'misty' effect looks fantastic :-)
