Two really helpful pages for beginners...
Well, it's two in one really, 
Petapixel is a blog that whilst it doesn't take itself too seriously, it delivers news and interesting articles for beginners and pros alike.

When I see things like 'convolution' it brings back half forgotten ideas in topology and makes me rather poorly 
I've seen this stuff before and think I would rather concentrate on the arty stuff now; so g is a filter is it, see what you done, why integrate, what is the reasoning behind the formula.
I'll keep the link just in case
joking, it is a great link really.
