    Another Cool find!

While up at our camp/land today I stumbled upon this!

Of course I had to REACH up on my tipys toes,(balance) on a brick, with the tripod extended as much as possible. I need to stop looking up for things - I'm too short for these shots!

But I am happy with the result over all. The coloring just seems off. This nest is under the roof overhang of our (outhouse!) which is white, and they were in the shade. I'll be back there tomorrow... in about 12 hours..... if anyone has any suggestions. I just can't possibly use a flash on these little guys!

    Another Cool find!

    Here are my settings:
    Manual Mode, ISO-200, f/8, 1/25 sec.
If I'm missing something here, let me know.
    Thank you Again!!!

Colin - you're killing me here! What did you do???

I tried - well, what I know. So, that isn't much, but....my other excuse is.... it's almost 11pm, and I've been up since 6... after going to bed at 1:30am from the races/fireworks Friday Night! I'm tired...... LOL...

I think I figured it out... I went to my "color balance" and adjusted the white balance "warmer".
My camera's white balance was set to manual, the white card. Should I have set it to auto, or shadow or something else??? I'm still learning "when" to use that setting. Is there some sort of "cheat" sheet for white balance???

Let me know if this looks better??? I'll read in AM... I need to get some sleep now!
    Thanks again!!!' Nighty Night all!

I just opened it up in Photoshop's RAW converter - clicked on the white balance tool - and clicked on the white roof ...

    ... job done

Probably the two best ways are (a) to set it to auto (it doesn't guarantee that it'll get it right, but often they're surprisingly close), or (b) Take a reference shot with a gray card (not sure how automated WB correction is in Coral though).

Thank you, is there a time when it's "best" to change your camera's white balance?

Can you refer me to any book, webpage, informational reading.... on how this works???

    Thanks!

    Last week?
    Stick it on Auto anytime.

If you mean when should you manually set it; things gets more interesting.

    To pinch Colin's style of response;
Short answer - whenever the subject's illumination changes colour temperature, which usually also means when you move from one place to another.

Long answer - If you go with the manual setting, choose Tungsten or Flourescent when indoors, or Flash if predominant light is your flash, then if outdoors; Sunny, Cloudy or Shade depending where the subject is. Note that Cloudy means overcast and Shade means the sky is blue BUT the subject is not in the sunlight. I only mention this because it caught me out a few years ago when I was learning.

Have you tried Sean (McQ's) tutorial on Understanding White Balance here at CiC?

    Cheers,

    Thanks Dave

I will bookmark that link - print it off and hopefully understand it sooner than later!

Sometimes you win and sometimes... you come in 2nd! haha It's still fun - even when the shots don't come out! That's why I really enjoy this forum, very helpful information!

Yes Outhouse! We own 40 acres of some gorgeous land not too far from home. Quite peaceful to be there.....Just love being there!!!
There is a small cabin with electricity and gas heat....But no running water We just primed the pump for the well, so we now have water.... but it only runs out of the hand pumper!
Here it is...just this last weekend:

    Another Cool find!

Here is our view to the East in the Fall(our first fall)-this was taken before I knew anything about exposure, filters...etc... but it shows the colors pretty good

Hopefully within the next year or two we can expand and add the "reading" room!

Not "flushing" just yet Colin! Although I could forgo my son's college tuition, feeding my kids (I tried that once, but the law says I have to)- and we could add on now! I'd be one happy camper!

    Trey,
Thank you! I really enjoy spending time there, it is quite a beautiful area. I always try to find something "new" to capture!
