Basically it's a technique that varies the softening depending on the tone, but with "manual over-ride" for areas that need to be sharp (like eyes etc).
I think it looks very good colin. The skin looks soft yet plenty of detail. The lighting is excellent as well. Care to explain the technique in a little more detail ?

The "crux" of it is ...
- Select entire image
- Copy to clipboard
- Duplicate the layer
- Add mask to top layer
- Paste image into mask
- Load mask as selection
- Apply gaussean blur
- Reduce Opacity of blurred layer
- Deselect
- Erase portions of image that should be sharp (eyes, brows, lips etc)
