Incredible photo, Jack. Macro shots is just one of the areas that interests me. I'm quite the beginner at the moment, and I don't yet own a macro lens. Just a question about your post, Dave, about "toning down." What, exactly, do you mean about toning down the background? Do you mean the background colors appear too vivid?

Parts of the background are a bit on the 'bright' side, Jeff. Highlights in particular are a bit 'strong'.

This often happens with macro shots, particularly with a rather dark subject and a paler background. An ideal exposure on the main subject also creates a rather bright background which competes with the intended subject for attention.

Overall exposure adjustment would also affect the 'model' brightness level as well as the background. The ideal option is to work with an Adjustment Layer plus a mask which can be edited to selectively 'tone down' the over bright background areas.

A little trickier than it sounds; but I'm sure it would be well within Jack's capabilities.
