I'm think that Ken posted his example as an illustration of a point, rather than as an invitation for it to be critiqued in quite the way it has been. The thread is about sharpening.
I think it is only fair to those who may be in the early stages of their development that perceived wisdom is that it is always preferable to shoot in RAW and to then post-process the file, than to shoot in JPEG and end up with the image that the camera decides you're going to get.
However, we seem to have a suggestion here (apologies if I'm reading it incorrectly) that you can take the JPEG and post-process it further to make it even better. I'm not sure that this is a workflow that many would subscribe. It might be helpful to some to see the improvement that's referred to and perhaps some insight into the steps that are taken in applying post processing to JPEGs.
