Indeed two beautiful shots, but the Haulashore Island - Revisited was better. This one is a bit orange an the little waves made the other one more exciting to see

Thanks for the comments folks. Actually - the sun hooked under a mass of cloud that was just at the right height, turning the whole sky and water bright "blood red" ...

... what your seeing here is AFTER I'd knocked 1/2 the kick out of it!

Yep - mid winter here (probably about -3 dec C outside right now)

It's good because I don't have to get up at 5am for sunrises, or wait until 9pm at night for sunsets - AND the sun doesn't set so far to the south (which is a "photographic problem" where I live).

I always thought you add these blue and purple colors to your pictures. So, you mean these are real colors of the sky?

One question: in this kind of shots, do you use GND or Reversed GND? I guess should use Reversed GND since the sun is down, am I correct?

I actually did 3 shots - but they're all in seperate threads (look for "Haulashore Island - Revisited" and "Fisherman's Wharf")

One question: in this kind of shots, do you use GND or Reversed GND? I guess should use Reversed GND since the sun is down, am I correct?

No. No GND filters. They're only needed if you want to balance a scene (eg your trying to protect shadow detail or if one portion is a lot brighter than another). In this case the water reflects the sky at around the same level (so no adjustment needed there) and I'm not trying to protect shadow detail (so no adjustment needed there either). The only filter I used was a Singh-Ray Vari-ND to have more control over shutterspeed (that's what gives you the motion blur in the sky, and smooths out some of the ripples a bit).

The BIG thing to remember (and I suspect that you've already realized this) is the fact that the best light for photography may be waaaaay after the best light for human eyes. Case in point - take a look at the "Fishernam's Wharf" shot ... I couldn't even see it through the viewfinder (I actually took one shot - "bumped the camera around a bit" until it precisely aligned with "probably just about right" and then took the shot you see there

As promised, here's a 16mm wide-angle view of the scene at the approx time I was shooting the shot above. RAW -> JPG via ACR defaults (no other processing) ...
