First Shots New Nikon D5100

Hi,

I have been waiting six weeks for this day. I now have a new D5100 to replace, through insurance, my D3100 that was busted by my dogs. I only had to pay a small difference to go up to the D5100 so I was happy with that. I thought I would share some of my first shots with the new camera, they are taken at various locations, my house, a dam in Canberra and the Zoo, they have been quickly run through PS to resize and small touch ups for sharpness/brightness/contrast and of course one conversion to b&w.

Congratulations, Jason. Glad it's arrived. I'm sure you'll make great images with it. Just try and keep it away from the dogs!

Already we can already see what's going to be coming. I think that is a very strong image. Wonderful bold lines and shapes. The shadow patterns on the (... what do you call them - buttresses?) are brilliant.

I wondered about a crop in from the left so that our attention was thrown solely onto those three right hand side buttresses and their reflections.

#1 is my pick. I like its simplicity, angles and the reflection really does it for me.
Nothing like a new camera to play with eh.

I agree with Greg and Donald, I also think that first one is very good.

What with the shapes, shadows and reflections, it has it all and yet is a simple enough composition to pull it off.

Now, keep that neckstrap away from the edge of anything

+ 1 for all above comments, #1 is the best for me also. Looks like the extra money you put up, could prove to be money well spent.

Thank you all for the comments. I am looking forward to exploring the extras that come with the 5100, things like bracketing and the ability to set up to take timed shots, are both areas that interest me.

I wondered about a crop in from the left

I was wondering as well how far in to crop the image with the first block on the left in shadow I was in two minds whether to do as you suggested or leave it. I left if obviously, but here is the tighter crop, again I am not sure about that little bit that is left in the pic on bottom right. I don't think my cloning skills are up to making it look natural

Jason, that's just about perfect.
One thing I missed the first time though, there appears to be a can floating in the water middle right of shot.
A simple bit of cloning should fix that up.
