[Cambridge in Colour]

This is a monochrome-themed competition that is open to all CiC members.

ENTERING. Add your MONOCHROME/B&W image in a new post below. Make sure to change your post title to a name for your picture (click the "Go Advanced" button). Only one entry per person, and any tinted images should utilize no more than one color. For help posting images, go here.

VOTING. When this competition reaches 10 entries, a poll will be automatically added and any member may then vote. After 2 days, voting ends and the winner is determined.

Once voting begins, a new competition will be automatically started.

Photos must be your own, and never entered into one of our prior competitions. We also ask that only recently taken or edited photos be used as entries (in the spirit of motivating everyone to continually improve).

Thanks so much for the nod, everyone! It's also great to see the other deserving images getting their recognition as well.

There is a bit of nostalgia about my entry. I recently converted it from a scan of a color slide captured on my honeymoon in 1983. Neither my wife nor I had ever owned a camera and had no plans to own one. A week before the wedding we figured it might be a good idea to have a cheap camera just to document our honeymoon, so we bought a Minolta point-and-shoot 35mm camera. That's when I got hooked on photography.

I just wanted to mention how much I enjoy your image, "The Elder." It reminds me so much of the classic portraits made in the last half of the 19th century, especially the images made by Julia Margaret Cameron. I suspect that if more people were aware of the history of photography, yours would have been the winning image, and deservedly so.

I wonder if I could persuade you to consider blurring the area of the ear to match the blur of the rest of the image. For me, it seems a little too sharp for the rest of the image.

In these days of pixel peeping when sharpness seems all too often to be the most important goal, I was especially glad to see that so many people voted for your image. I would have thought that most would not appreciate an unsharp image and I'm so glad to be very wrong about that.

Thanks for taking time to write, Mike. I feel in this day and age the most one can received is a fellow pushing the "like" button. One gets numerous "likes" but it seemed impersonal and almost meaningless. I also appreciate your comment on my photo. Quite frankly, I didn't think it would get noticed as it did. My selfish motive was to "educate" fellow photographers that sharpness is not an end all. I seem to be losing in this endeavor. But there's always hope. I was glad to know that you "get it". Consider further blurring the image? Great point. Sharpness is over-rated. Cheers, my friend.
