Error 1 on Canon EFS 17-85mm Lens

I keep on getting the above error with this one lens. "Err01 Communication between the camera and lens is faulty. Clean the lens contacts"

I have cleaned the contacts to no avail....

It would appear to affect only this lens at certain zoom settings between 17mm and 35mm whilst in AV mode only. ALL other lenses work ok. 10-22mm, 18-200mm and 28-135mm, 50mm etc

Bodies in use are EOS 50D and EOS 7D.

Can anyone please advise me of how to clear the above error.


Can the lens be serviced or is it beyond repair.

I have never had this happen, but I think I have seen postings about breaks in the ribbon cable internally. YOu might try googling for that.

Many thanks have now Googled it. Only solution is send for repair. Postings describe in detail my problem.
