Roots in Sandstone

First let me apologize if I linked the photo incorrectly. (But I think I got it right )

This is a photo of a root system sticking out of a canyon wall in Illinois. It's hand held, which I hardly ever shoot handheld, and shot with my Nikon 1 camera.

So my questions are this... Really how does it look. The only editing was a little tweaking in curves, and removal of some graffiti. Otherwise I was thinking on cropping the bottom to the roots, removing the dirt, and possibly cropping part of the dark on top.

Any helpful hints are appreciated.

I think that's a strong abstract-like image. It's an image that's very much about lines, shapes and textures and, I find, engages you in a way that keeps you looking.

I agree with Donald's thoughts, and find that is has a painting feel to it, if that makes sense. I was going to use the word paintingesc but am pretty sure it isn't a real word . One of my first thought also was how would it look in b&w. I would love to give a run through SEP2. I really like the photo.

The crops you are considering, in my mind, would eliminate the effect of the roots reaching from the top down to the bottom.

It's an image that's very much about lines, shapes and textures and, I find, engages you in a way that keeps you looking.

Consider converting this to black-and-white to perhaps further emphasize all of that.

I have another shot of the same root system that I did convert to Black and White, This one is a little different but I think the extra rock on the right adds a little more to the story. But it may be too busy.

The second one tells a very different story that I also like. It convinces me that I'd really like to see your black-and-white treatment of the first one.

I did a quick B&W conversion in SilverEfex and REALLY like this one. My concerns with the Top and Bottoms not looking correct have gone away with the B&W version.

I liked the color version but I like the black-and-white version considerably more. Tweak it until you get it just the way you want it and it will make a nice print.
