Grandson on the Beach

Nice shot! Very typical "little boy" picture... I'd like to see a bit cropped off the top and the right side of the image. He is a "little" too centered for my taste.

This is a simple image that works well for me and one that I'm sure your family will cherish. Nice exposure, composition and shutter speed for stopping the action in the water. The position of both hands is very effective. And the round object that he is about to pick up matches the shapes in his shorts and the color of his shirt.

must be great to combine your hobby of taking photographs and spending time with your grandson.

I'm no expert but based on what I think I know, I would of cropped a bit off the right-hand side and the bottom, just so that he was not so central. The other thing I tried was to sharpen the picture a bit; 130% with a radius of 0.8, I thought this just made a good picture a little better, but as I say I'm no expert.

Yup all boy that one is! I thought about cropping more in that direction but the wife said stop and then to top things off I down loaded HDR EFEX Pro 2 a few days earlier and then 2.1 today. Well after the 2.1 download I started having troubles with LR4. The short of it I ended up deleting HDR EFEX Pro 2 and 2.1 and some of my images and hit that folder my mistake. I still have the images on the card in the camera and will try a retake with it later tomorrow. My head hurts right now...lol

Yes it is great to combine the two and the really great part is capturing it for well a long time to come.
If you like post your version, I would like to see it and seeing helps me more in the learning process. I did think it was a little to soft. I sometimes get carried away with sharpening so I stopped a little to short this time.

The image of your second grandson is also nice, though it would be dramatically improved if you have that or a similar image that doesn't cut off his foot.

The second image of your grandson picking up the round object is cropped much better. (Tell your wife that she's wrong ) However, it is sharpened substantially more than the original and the image of the other grandson. Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too much sharpening.

I missed the foot being cut off when I posted it. I'll have to check and see if I have a better shot.

Sharpening is hard for me right now. I use Nik software and LR4 mostly when exporting. I need to go back to the tutorials on sharpening with Nik. From what I have read here and other places not too many folks use the LR4 sharpening very much. Or is it better to use PSE10 for sharpening? Thank you for your time and input.

By the way, as much as your one image is oversharpened, it doesn't even compare to my first oversharpened images. They remain the laughing stock of me and a friend of mine ten years later.

It does look better than mine, much better. I do like the border in the second one except for the heavy black on the right and bottom. What did you make the border with?

Hi Carl,
I used ‘FastStone Image viewer for Windows version 4.6’ to produce the border effect. This can be downloaded and used for free (Non-Commercial use only) at: www.FastStone.org
Once installed, double click on the image you want open then move the cursor to left-hand side of the screen, this will reveal a dropdown menu, the ‘border effects’ are at the bottom. This program has many other tools to play with, just move the cursor around the edge of the screen to see them.

Now I really like it a lot. I will have a look at the software. I downloaded HDR EFEX Pro2.1 again and re-installed it after deleting the other, seems like it is doing okay this time around. More than likely it was something I did wrong...lol. I will give it a little time and then check FastStone out.

When using that frame, I believe the image needs to be croppped to allow more space between the bottom of the image and the boy's feet. That's because this particular frame uses part of the image.

You used a different crop this time that includes the "black hole" in the lower left corner. It's so similar in shape and size to the thing the boy is picking up that it's a distraction for me.

I saw that right after posting it so I went back and cropped that out. Here is the right one hopefully...lol
