monitor calibration

After spending some time processing an image, I felt it was time to give printing a go. I have Scott Kelby's book and after following the step by step instructions, I was disappoionted to see my print was heaps darker than on the monitor. Any tips on calibrating a LCD monitor would be appreciated. Does it have to be done using a hardware device or is there a quick easy way?

OK - serious again ...

Best solution is to use a hardware device (colorimeter) such as a Spyder or ColorMunki. I use a Spyder III, but I also have a Spyder II that I don't use anymore if you'd like to buy it? (since we're in the same country) - perhaps just send me a PM if your interested (I don't want much for it - and it's in perfect condition). (end of shameless sales pitch!)

I use Spyder3Elite, it is really amazing and doing the job, i read in many websites it is better than Spyder2, but that doesn't matter much, I also recommend ColorMunki, many good reviews of it.
