Yes, and these really strike me as portraits...I am reminded of Louis Aggasiz Fuertes for some reason, maybe it's the lighting and colours.
This one actually also reminded me of the cover art for the first album by Irish tin-whistle player Mary Bergin, released in the 1970s, although it's on a furze bush, not a fern:
