    Hi John,

I think that many photographers are "nervous" about doing such things - however - I suspect that there are also probably many who aren't so worried (me for one); at the end of the day we only need 12 "doners" per year (assuming of course that it's a monthly PP challenge), and if we did it via an FTP site then we could probably put a password on it anyway.

I think ideally there should be room for artistic interpretation as well; in other words, not just a file that needs to be technically sorted, but one where cropping and cloning could be brought to bear.

If the original was big enough pixel-wise, and we accepted that we were not going to print on A2* from it, just web display at 72 ppi, then we may end up with several different content images from one source picture.

    * A2 is about 4 x Letter size for our American members who may not be familiar with European paper sizes.

    Agree/disagree?

that is exactly the idea. This is not a Photoshop or what ever program course. The idea is to shown a picture that could be consider a disaster. Then everybody tries to fix it or shown a picture with our own perspective.

At the end, we could vote for the most interesting/appealing PP version of it.

Hi Dave, looks very nice. But I guess the whole purpose was to tell us how you did it? So, what did you do to it?

I for one would never post a raw file that with some work could become a Commercially Viable photograph. Don't get me wrong I'm not worried about the members of this site using the file, but there are some people who do search photographic forums looking for photos that they could never take themselves. If someone take a low res file say 800/600 at 72dpi it is no great loss if on the other hand they can get the master RAW file what proof has the photographer that he/she owns the copyright to that photo.

I think we can still do this, but use problem images and see how people here can come up with the best correction for it. It does not have to be a perfect shot. I don't there is that much challenge in processing a nice shot like the one we already have here (sorry Dave, I mean in general )

That is why I thought I can provide a lot of those files. I have about 1 TB of them

No, I don't mind. I think it's a little bright, but it could be my monitor, I suppose. Here's my attempt and settings in ACR. I then put it into PS/CS4. Selected the waterfall area and used refine edge to feather it to 250 pixels, then inverted selection. Used levels to increase brightness in area outside waterfall. Shapened that area, but not the waterfall.

that is exactly the point! it's not the same to fix a messy picture than one take it i.e. by Colin. With the one take it by Colin the only thing you have to do is crop a little bit, apply some noise reduction, control highlights and that's it.

on the other hand, having a messy picture will give us the chance to try a lot of things to get a good picture.

Well - that was an easy start

By the way, that's the kind of image you can stretch horizontally even further for an even more "panoramic look".

PS: That shot would look good printed big and wide on canvas or paper - could be a good seller.

Rob, I agree, it is a bit bright (whoops)!

Daniel, Yes, I agree they should be more "problematic" pics than Colin's usual shots or this waterfall, or there will not be enough to do.

Alis, I made some notes, but they're at home (and I'm not), will post later.

    Regards to all,

LOL - you only see my images AFTER the problems have been fixed

Seriously though, I'm not totally convinced on the need for "more problematic" pics - sure, it's something that has a need in the "real world", but it's also getting into more advanced topics when perhaps there's more to be gained from mastering fundamentals?

Additionally, I suspect that there's ultimately more to be gained by helping people overcome whatever aspects of the image that needed the repair, at the capture stage.

Just my random thoughts on the matter - at the end of the day PP covers so many areas

I think they call this the 'experimental phase'

Have a go. See if there are any problems. We can always start a more formal comp later.

Perhaps we're just all so excited about something new to sink our teeth in to that we just can't wait to start!
