Even though they're "much smaller" than dragonflies, they still look like small dragonflies to me, and don't look like damselflies. When you say "much smaller" do you mean they're less than an inch long?

Nice shot. The easiest ways to differentiate dragonflies from damselflies, I think, are wing position at rest (no help in this shot, but dragons hold their wings perpendicular to their bodies, while damsels hold them back against their bodies), and very different head and eye shapes. I'll post one of each.
