Manila Flooding

Copied this photo from an AP reporter covering the flooding in Manila, Philippines..did some cropping and exposure adjustment ..thoughts??

Travis, not sure what prompted you to take a reporters image and edit it, as we normally work with our own images or someones image whom is seeking help. However since you asked...I think your edit has lost the intent of the reporter.....to tell the story about conditions and the scene surounding the flood. While your edit may be more focussed on the girl and her dog I prefer the origonal as it tells a more complete story.

Hi, My concern on this is copyright first and foremost, you could easily find yourself in hot water with this.
As stated above it is not an image taken by yourself so to make comment would be IMO wasteful and serve no real purpose.

I'm going to leave the two thumbnails visible in order that others might see the points being made by the two subsequent posters.

CiC can never condone the copying of work by others and the re-editing of it. Should the photographer who took these images see them on here and wish them removed, we will immediately to do so.

If we wish to make a point about how someone else's image might be improved, we should always seek their permission to edit it and make it available for public view. Here on CiC members will sometimes offer suggestions about images to colleagues and illustrate these by showing them on an edited version of the image originally posted. However, that is part of learning and if any member does not wish that to be done to their images, that will be respected.

But we should not copy, edit and post images that belong to someone who is not involved in CiC and who is not asking members on here for C & C.

Maybe I am naive but I was under the impression that anything that is posted on the internet is fair game. Am I wrong? I would appreciate any feedback on what is acceptable and what is not. I certainly did not intend to insult the photographer or break the rules of this forum. My only intent was to share how I would work this image as a photographer.

You're right. All on the internet is a fair game - as long as you keep your edit to yourself if the image is not yours. If you aspire to be a photographer, you need to respect the work of others and ask them first if an edit is OK. Better yet, start taking your own pictures and edit them to your liking. You will learn a lot by doing so. Just an opinion from an amateur photographer or a hobbyist or whatever.

A photograph appearing on the internet is the same as a photograph appearing elsewhere. The only difference is that one on the internet has the potential to reach a far wider audience.

The copyright on it still belongs to the person who made the image.

There have been a number of discussions on here in the past about copyright and if you do a search using that work you'll be able to find them.

But I think the nub of the issue is not about copyright, it is, as Willie says, about the need to respect the work of others and always seek permission to tamper with their work. If we can't obtain that permission then, I think, we don't touch the work.
