Good series Joe, looks to be that you had a bit of work to do with slightly harsh light. A good job you have done on those Egrets. White is a tough one.
Thanks Bobo and Paul... to get the white exposed properly I always have the blinkies turned on and that screen visible on the LCD. The blinkies and watching the histogram gets the exposure of the bright areas correct. I take a quick shot and glance at the display, if the blinkies are flashing showing blown highlights I underexpose most times to -1 or more with the EV control. Then in post processing raise the exposure to just short of the white bright areas becoming overexposed, controlling the exposure in post processing so that the detail is retained in the white feathers. Also the Adjustment Brush in Lightroom 4 performs well to control exposure and hightlights in small areas of the image. Knocking down hot spots.
I love that first one with the feathers fluffed and the light behind some of them and the bright white against the dark background. It's a beautiful image.
