Unfortunatelly it only works at telecom wavelengths, i.e. near infrared, it is extremelly difficult (currently impossible) to make it work at shorter wavelengths, i.e. visual light. However Canon already have a DO lens series (DO is for Diffraction Optics) allowing for the fabrication of short (but not planar) telephoto lens, the main problem being the lower IQ and the fact that being shorter doesn't also mean lighter. The 70-300 DO is actually shorter than the 24-105 one.

They say that the "need" to incorporate high quality camera in cell phone drives this kind of research. Some scientists also believe that in some years (how many??) we will have ultra slims cell phones cameras with todays Canon 5dII/24-70L quality IQ incorporating this kind of technology but we 'll see... And if some of you don't believe just remember the "I will never shoot digital, it will never be film quality" statements "few" years ago
