Very nice photo but I think I agree with Gretchen. The original version has a soft feel but at the same time has more impact.

Lovely images. I think the first image feels softer due to the depth of colour compared to the second. That said the second image, which I think has a little more clarity, is also very striking so depending on what you intentions are and how you frame each of them for me they are both very good. If I personally had to choose one, it would be the second as I like the slightly increased contrast/clarity. How did you shoot the image?

The image was taken of a rose outside my front door, backlit by the sun no flash was used and the camera was hand held. (The rose in called Jude the Obscure)

The lens used was a Sigma 105 Macro lens. Camera Canon EOS 7D
Shutter 1/1000th
F Stop F4
ISO 800
In LightRoom the following adjustments were made:
Exposure +.55
Contrast + 11
Highlights -51
Shadows -9
Whites -36
Blacks 0
Clarity - 4
Vibrance -29
Saturation 0
Tone Curve not amended
Sharpening
Amount 25
Radius 1.0
Detail 25
Masking 0
Noise Reduction
Luminance 20
Detail 50
Contrast 19
Color 25
Detail 50
Image 2 is image 1 edited in Photoshop.
With a black and white layer added via Silver Effex Pro 2 blending mode set to luminosity opacity about 6%.
Fog Filter applied from Nik Color Effects
Image then saved.
