A friend of mine is thinking of getting the above. He doesn't presently have DSLR, so no need to stick with one brand.
Is this camera OK, or any ideas for one about the same budget?
Thanks,
Rob

The 500D is part of Canon's entry-level lineup. Image quality is just fine, but some people find the entry-level lineup a bit too small to handle comfortably. Additionally, some prefer the superior ergonomics of the XXD prosumer line (currently 50D) - the likes of the QCD (Quick Control Dial) make the camera a lot easier to operate, but of course, they do cost more.
Having been looking around myself lately, including at this model, and he nikon D5000 seems to be the key competition for the 500D, with similar specs at a similar price. Buying a battery grip can help with the handleing, aswell as adding battery life, not sure how much those cost, have a quick look on amazon or something.
