Subject Jumping Out Of An Image...

We need an illustration for our rescue group. I need to show a heart with a rescue Maltese such as this jumping through/out of the heart...



I don't really know where to start.

Right now I have PSE-10 but I will be getting Photoshop CS6 within a few days.

Richard, Just as a learning exercise I watched the video Val mentioned and had a quick try using your dog example using PSE7.
I was not looking for 'quality' (as is pretty obvious) but trying to learn the principles of getting the layers in correct order.

The below was made from 3 layers;
Layer 1 - background with gradient as demonstration. This could be a pic or plain design of course.
Layer 2 - heart shape from PSE graphics.
Layer 3 - dog after selecting, cutting and erasing where required.



Apart from selecting/finding the background and heart pics the hardest bit will be to make a good selection to cut the dog from your orig pic.

Getting a good selection for that image shouldn't be difficult.



As a quick example, I used the "Calculations" function under "Edit" in Photoshop. First, I switched to the "Channels" palette; then I examined each channel to see which one(s) gave the best separation between Buffy and the black background. The Red channel was really good for that, so I used the red channel twice in Calculations and set the blend mode to Overlay. I saved the result as an Alpha channel; took a brush to the resulting channel, using white set to Overlay for Buffy and black set to Overlay for the background. That gave me a pure black and white image which I saved as a selection; so I went back to the Layers palette, duplicated the base layer, and then placed the selection from the Channels menu as a mask for the duplicated layer. Petty simple. I put a bright green layer underneath the top masked layer to show where a but of work could be done to refine the mask edge; but it was a lot less work than trying to manually select the edge of all Buffy's fur from the background!

My wife wanted a different image and chose this one. Here is one of my attempts. I don't really care about the BG color since this will be printed on a white banner.



We will have the following over the image with the text curving down in sort of a semi circle:
OPEN YOUR HEART
And the following under the image with the text curving up
TO A RESCUE MALTESE

Try doing a dropped shadow cast to the right hand side probably about 4 O-clock. It will help the edge look more natural and add a bit more of a 3D feel.
