Two magpies aka maggies or pies with a visual defect

So what sort of optical problem do these two have? Well, they are cross-pie'd, of course! Yes I know. It was a truly bad pun. Even I am a tad embarrassed by that one! Sorry.

Question for the experts - how to make sure both birds are in focus in such situations? I have tried using smaller and smaller apertures to get better DOF. Helps a bit but never quite there and of course there is the loss of light penalty.
