Olympus E620

Hi All
A friend of mine is thinking of buying her first DSLR camera and is looking at this Olympus. Can anyone give advice about this camera and its suitablity as an entry level camera?

Hi Walshy,

I did give this some serious thought before plumping for the Nikon D5000.

My main reasons against it were small sensor size/noise and the lack of affordable lens range; either reasonable or V. expensive, with nothing much in between.

I sure people could argue against either of these reasons, but that's just how I saw it and for me, the decision's taken.

The eternal question...

Almost anything if she's liable to stick with it and not want to expand (even the E-620).

Also depends what she wants to photograph.

If considering adding things like more lenses, flashes, etc. is likely, the initial choice is all the more important.

I haven't had an entirely smooth ride with mine, so I wouldn't, at the moment, wholeheartedly recommend what I bought. So the field's wide open.

Yeah I feel the same with my Canon 1000D. I think if I had my time over and know what I know now I would have gone with a better lens rather than the kit lenses. Having said that I am I don't regret my purchase and am happy with my Canon.

But seriously..Before i bought Canon I had considered an OLY something or another because i had a 35mm in th epast by oly and was happy...

But like dave i came to the same conclusion.....

As a freind pointed out...Its a wonder that OLY even stays in the Dslr market. Infact ive only seen maybe 2 or 3 people over the years using an OLY DSLR..

and having started 4/3, it has now split in two (with micro 4/3), thus further fragmenting their lens market. Although obviously Panasonic are taking the lead with that at the moment.

However, those formats do offer the bridge camera size and functionality with far better quality, so I guess they have a reason to exist - as long as you don't plan expanding too much on the original purchase, they could be a way to go.

Just recieved a E620 today as a gift from Mama and the kids.
After looking @ the D5000 & 500D I chose the Oly.
My reasoning:
Decent reviews.
For my needs, small prints, posting on the net and this great forum.
A fair 2 lens package, 14-40, 40-150.
And the least expensive of all three.
Now to figure it out and shoot something...
One note though, the optical viewer is very small.

Just getting familliar with my Oly, seems MUCH better my trusty lil Kodak, auto focus seems instantanous , still trying to find Ollies sweet spots though.

You won't regret your choice. I have 5 Olympus cameras, E-1, E-300, E-500, E-510 and now E-620 + a stack of Ollie lenses. I love the Four Thirds system and the Ollie build quality is fantastic. So are the images! Happy shooting!

I am one of them who moved from another brand to Oly (E620) because of their inspiring technologies that are used in all Oly cameras and lenses.

enjoy discovering the features and qualities of E620 (don't forget to refer the user manual, you'll find lots of interesting things)... and happy shooting

Don't forget to challenge yourself and the camera. Use the camera under different lighting conditions, actions shots, and landscapes. This will give you a lot of challenges to check the capabilities of the camera.
