Pretty in Pink

Does anybody know what these pink stalk flowers are called?



I love the tiny pink flowers but so far I haven't been able to identify this plant.

Nice looking flowers -- but no idea what they are! Do they grow in a garden or wild?

I don't know either Frank but they look nice. Great colour and detail, especially when enlarged in Lightbox. Focus is spot on too.

Lovely photo think it is a grass not a flower thinks it is Fountain Grass – Rueppelii may be wrong though.

I found this to be a particularly difficult flower to get a good image of due to its grass-like shape and the inability to get good separation from both the adjoining flowers and the contrasty background. In the end I said the heck with it so I presented it pretty much as I saw it without trying to simplify the image or separate the flowers from the busy background.

Any composition, shooting or post processing hints would be most welcomed!

Thank you for pointing me in the right direction Tak! It looks like you have accurately identified the flowers as Cockscomb.

I have no idea how you located the correct image out of hundreds on that page but it is indeed a Celosia Argentea with a common name of Silver Cockscomb, Plumed Cockscomb, Flamingo Feathers, Wheat Celosia and others.

From what I can determine, Celosia can be found in Africa, Indonesia, India, and elsewhere. It grows in the wet season and grows well while other plants succumb to mold and other diseases like mildew. This one was in a Bog Garden at the Riverbanks Gardens.

Ironically, last year I photographed a different variety of Celosia in the local garden center but didn’t see the resemblance until seeing the images in your link.

Here is a close-up of the Cockscomb. This is cropped to about 10% of the original number of pixels in this image. Now I wish I had moved in closer but the bees were fairly fast moving and just a bit aggressive!
