I feel that it looks a little stark with the white background. I have done a grey fill to the sky (55% opacity, 40% tolerance, non contigious) to see if it looks better. What do you think?

Ken, Thank you for your thoughts.. The greys you added give the photo a sense of softness and nostalgia, I did consider doing a more antique look but I find the grit and starkness has a more aesthetic appeal to me....
I would like to hear from others as well...About the diffrence of taste

I like the overall impression quite a lot.
I prefer the greater contrast in the first one. You might want to try toning down the bright spot on the ground underneath the bridge just a bit.
If you're satisfied with the large amount of space on the right, darken the two trees to add more interest to that area.
If you like sepia toning, you would probably like applying it to this image. It's easy to lose contrast when using sepia because the brights aren't as bright and the darks aren't as dark, so do your best to keep the contrast similar to your first version.

i like the contrasty nature of the of the photo but the sky is too much, how about a crop to remove the left side of the image to where the bridge abutment just starts, giving a square aspect ratio?
